Episode Transcript
Good afternoon everyone.
Good afternoon.
Now.
Last week we stopped in verse 22 in the book of Jude And what I would like to do today, we've been talking about compassion and mercy.
I want to speak a little bit more on compassion and mercy before we move on.
But we left off in verse 22 in the book of Jude, which says, Jude says, and if some have compassion.
Making a difference.
Heavenly Father, thank you so much, Lord, for this time that you have blessed us with, Lord, to come together And get into your word, Lord, and learn, Father.
And we pray, Lord, that your Holy Spirit will just teach us here today, Father Guide our thoughts, Lord.
Help us to stay attentive to your word today, Lord.
And just open up your word to us, Lord.
Help us learn, Father.
Teach us.
I pray, Lord.
In Jesus' name today, Lord.
Amen.
Amen.
Amen.
Okay, so we have been discussing the word compassion, which means sympathy.
Pity for mercy, which we read in verse 21 of Jude, which says, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the Mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
Now last week we stopped in verse 22 with the words making a difference And I said, I believe that means that there are different types of compassion that we can show to others.
Not only are there different types of compassion But there are different ways of showing compassion.
We can show compassion by words And we can show compassion by deeds.
Now, in the book of Job, as I have been learning at our associate pastor at church I go to, he is in the book of Job going verse by verse.
In the book of Job, Job has been stricken with sores all the way from the crown of his head to the soles of his feet.
He can find no relief from it nowhere so he gets in a bed of ashes and he lays in these this bed of ashes because it's probably the the softest place that he can find at the time that would be most comfortable to him.
Well all of Job's, well, I'll say all of Job's friends, three of Job's friends come to Job.
And they just sit with Job.
They don't say a word with him for a week.
They just sit.
That is compassion.
That is non-verbal compassion right there.
When you sit with somebody.
So that is one way of showing compassion for somebody.
Especially somebody who is a loved one.
Sometimes we don't have the words to say to come.
But just be in there, showing up for them.
That is one way we can show mercy and compassion at others.
We can show compassion by words and we can show compassion by deeds.
Our Savior Jesus Christ did both.
And he tells a wonderful parable about mercy in the book of Luke.
Chapter 10 that we should look at today before we move on in the book of Jude.
So I got everybody marked in the book of Luke.
Did I keep you marked?
I'm sorry, Miss Short.
We're going this way.
Where does he have my mark?
Uh Matthew Mark Lou, we're going this way.
Matthew, Mark, Mark, Luke, and John.
I believe it's in chapter 10.
We're going to start in verse 25, I believe, if my memory serves me correctly.
Right there.
Right there.
Okay, thank you.
So we're going to start in the verse 25.
Book of Luke, chapter 10, and we're going to start reading in the verse 25.
Now remember, we're discussing the word mercy and compassion, okay?
Luke 1025 says, and behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tempted him.
These are speaking to Jesus.
Jesus is, here at this gatherer.
And these people have been trying to tempt Jesus, the Pharisees and Sadducees, and this going on and on.
When the slaughter stands up.
And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tempted him, saying, Master, speaking to Jesus, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
That's a good question, isn't it?
We all would like to know that.
What should I do to inherit eternal life?
A lawyer here refers to someone who is supposed to be an expert in the Mosaic law.
Now the Mosaic law not only contains the Ten Commandments, but all the laws that were given to Israel.
This includes all the ceremonial laws, the civil laws, and the moral laws.
There are over 600 laws written in the first five books of God's Word.
And for an added bonus.
The first five books of the Bible are referred to as the Torah.
The Torah.
And the Ten Commandments are referred to as the Decalogue.
The Decalogue.
So if you hear someone mention these words, you know what they are referring to now, if you did not know before.
Luke 10, 26, he said unto him, Jesus is talking back to this guy.
What is written in the law?
How readest thou?
How do you interpret the law?
You're the man, you're the lawyer, you're the professional, you're the expert at the law.
How do you interpret the law?
As Jesus was asking.
And the lawyer said, and he answered, answering, said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart.
And with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind, and thy neighbor as thyself.
And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right, this do, and thou shalt live.
It's just Jesus replying back to us.
That's what Jesus said.
But he, the lawyer, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus And who is my neighbor?
Who is my neighbor?
That's a good question.
Who is my neighbor?
Do you notice here that the lawyer does not inquire how do I love the Lord with all my heart, soul, strength, and mind?
That's an even better question.
How do I do that?
His first thought is not about God.
His first thought is not about heavenly things, but about worldly things.
He is a worldly taught individual, expert in the laws without spiritual insight into the mercy To come from the very Savior he is trying to outwit.
He is standing here before Jesus, tempting Jesus, the one who is going to go and die for his sins.
And he is trying to outwit Christ and humiliate him in front of all these other people So many people think they can justify themselves today by their good works and worldly knowledge.
But when Jesus comes back again, all thy righteousness will not amount to nothing.
Romans 3. 9 says, What then are we better than they?
No in no wise.
For we have before proved, both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin.
All under sin.
As it is written, there is none righteous, no not one man.
There is none that understandeth.
There is none that seeketh after God.
That lawyer was worldly smart.
Problem was, he wasn't spiritually smart.
He was seeking at what he could do. to inherit eternal life.
And he was sitting there speaking with the very one who was going to die for him.
All the Old Testament, well not all, but a lot of the Old Testament was pointing to Jesus Christ, to the coming of the Savior, to the one who was going to die for their sins.
This man was too involved in all the laws.
He could tell you what laws to follow, but he couldn't tell you.
Put your faith in Jesus Christ. your Savior.
And that's what a lot of preachers do nowadays.
They can sit here and they can tell you about this They can tell you about all the laws to follow, but they can't tell you, put your faith in Jesus Christ and Him alone.
Through his blood shed was your sins forgiven.
For by grace are you saved through faith and that not of yourselves, not of works, lest any man should boast.
They won't tell you that, but they'll tell you what laws to follow.
Come on down the aisle here Kneel down here at these steps that we're gonna call an altar today.
That's not an altar, it's some steps.
Let's say this prayer together.
He can tell you all these other things, but he won't tell you.
Jesus Christ died for your sins.
He that believeth on him is not condemned.
But he that believeth not is condemned already.
Because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
That is how you are saved, folks.
By faith.
That's it.
Oh, brother Doug, that's too simple.
God's not going to make it hard for you, I promise.
God doesn't make it hard for you.
What makes it hard for you is your pride.
Your pride is what makes it hard for you.
This man was so focused on the laws that he could not see the Savior right in front of him.
He asked a great question, but he had the wrong motive.
Jesus goes on to answer this man's question with a great parable.
Jesus was such an amazing teacher.
He still is.
But the things that God has put in his word are just so amazing to me.
It's just wonderful.
And when you read it and when God opens your eyes to it, it's like, oh wow, that is just fantastic.
It's amazing how God has worded his words.
And folks, once you start understanding and you seek after God He will show you, I promise.
He wants you to know.
God doesn't make it hard.
He doesn't make it hard.
It's man that makes it hard.
Ah, it's just wonderful.
The more you read and the more God shows you and the more you learn, the more you want to know.
It's just fantastic.
So Jesus is going to answer this man's question with a wonderful parable that he tells.
Luke 10, 30.
And Jesus answering said Now remember, we're talking about compassion and mercy.
A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho.
Now in the Bible Anytime you're going to Jerusalem, you're going up.
Anytime when you're leaving Jerusalem, you're going down.
Miss Becky shaked her head.
That's right, eh, Miss Becky?
Yep.
A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho.
Now you notice it don't give the man's name.
It don't give his name Doesn't matter what the man's name was, does it?
A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves.
Which stripped him of his raiment, that's his clothing, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
Half dead.
And by chance there came down a certain priest, don't give his name, does it?
Just a certain priest.
And by chance, chance there came down a certain priest that way.
And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
So he saw the man over here half dead.
Now this is a priest.
He saw a man half dead.
He just kept walking.
Oh, I don't know that.
I'm staying away from that Stay away from it.
Folks, I want to tell you something.
Preachers, the priests nowadays, that are not telling you about Jesus Christ as your Savior That's exactly what they're doing.
They're not telling you about Jesus.
They're leaving you half dead.
We are half dead without Jesus Christ.
You're just waiting for the other half to die and go to hell without Christ.
That priest that passed by, he just passed by.
No compassion, no mercy, no nothing And by chance there came down a certain priest that way, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side And likewise, a Levite, those were the ones that God had appointed to take care of his tabernacle.
Those were the ones that were supposed to be telling the people about Jesus, about the coming Savior, and about God and his laws and his rules, the Levites.
And likewise, a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him and passed by on the other side.
So the Levite did the same thing as the priest did.
The Levite saw him.
Oh, that man's hurt and wounded.
He's half dead.
Nothing I can do.
No repent.
And he goes on.
It doesn't help him.
No compassion, no mercy, no sympathy, no pity, nothing.
But a certain Samaritan.
Now the Samaritans, the Jews did not like the Samaritans.
Jesus says, but a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was.
He came down to where the man was half dead.
And when he saw him, he had compassion on him.
Hear the words compassion not only gives us the idea of sympathy or pity, but it is more pronounced. with the definition of to make the boughs yearn.
This is a deep, deep yearning of compassion.
This is the type of compassion that is laid down your life for someone Compassion.
And this is one of the reasons why I believe Jesus is referring to himself as the Samaritan here.
Remember, this is a parable, which is just a short, simple story designed to teach a moral or spiritual or ethical lesson.
The Jews called him a Samaritan in John 8, 48.
Say that then answered the Jews and said unto him, telling Jews, say we not well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a devil.
The Jews called Jesus a Samaritan.
Now here's Jesus telling a parable with a Samaritan in it that's helping somebody Oh wow.
Jesus is the best teller of stories there is.
He is the best teacher.
Luke 10, 34.
And went to him.
This is the Samaritan that saw the man half dead.
He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an end, and took care of him.
Jesus said in Mark 2. 17, when he saith unto them, they that are whole have no need of the physician.
But they that are sick, I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Folks, if you don't know Jesus Christ as your Savior, you are half dead.
Jesus Christ came to heal you.
Amen.
He died for your sins in order that you may live.
The Levite and the priest left that man laying there to die.
The Samaritan went over there and helped him.
He helped him They that are whole have no need of the physician.
That man was not whole.
That man was half dead.
I came not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.
The righteous are like this water that Jesus is telling the parable to.
They want to justify themselves by their works when in fact we are all sinners And no amount of works we can do can satisfy what our Creator demands, and that is faith in the only one who justified the demand of our Creator by the shedding of his innocent blood on the cross.
Because of his great compassion he had toward you and me.
Luke 10, 35.
And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence.
And gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him, and whatsoever thou spendest more when I come again, I will repay thee.
Jesus shows us great compassion here in this parable.
When he returns again, I believe the compassion you have shown others will be rewarded.
But don't have compassion on others just for a reward.
Show compassion to others because you want to.
Christ did.
Christ didn't go to the cross and die for your sins for a reward.
He did it because he had compassion.
On each and every one of us.
He showed great mercy by staying on that cross and not coming off of it until all your sins were paid for.
I think.
Oh, what a say.
Oh Now Jesus asks not only the lawyer this question, but he asks us too.
Which now of these three Thinkest thou was neighbor unto him that fell among the thieves.
The priest and the Levite did not show any compassion.
No words and no action.
Only the Samaritan did both.
Luke 10, 37.
And he said, he that showed mercy on him, then said Jesus unto him, Go and do thou likewise.
That is one of Jesus' commands right there folks.
Go and do likewise.
Can you not show compassion on your fellow human beings?
Can you not show compassion on your brothers and sisters in Christ?
You bet you can.
If you know Jesus Christ as your Savior, you can My mama, she shows compassion on just about everything she sees.
Puppy dogs, cats, skunks, chickens, turtles.
My mama's one of them.
She'll stop and pick a turtle up out of the middle of the road and carry it over to the other side.
And then she leaves.
She don't know that turtle gets mad because the turtle wanted to go the other way.
You know.
So the turtle goes back out the road anyway.
Mama feeds everything.
Oh boy.
There's some puppy dogs at church up there.
She go up there and put dog food over in the puppy dog pins for them.
She sees animals in the parking lot up our Walmart or something.
She puts groceries down for the puppy dogs, the cats.
I think she feeds the skumps and stuff too.
I don't know.
But mama feeds just about everything Mama has compassion just all never does.
I'm still living.
She had compassion on me as a child, so you know I was a little stinker when I was a kid.
Mama Mama had compassion on me.
She had plenty of reasons to whoop me so much.
But Mama had a lot of compassion and she still does.
My mama is a very compassionate person.
We all should be compassionate.
You know if we were more compassionate, there would not be any murders.
There would not be any crimes if we were more compassionate on each other.
You ever thought about that?
If we show compassion to each and every human being there ever was and ever will be, I believe heaven's going to be like that.
I really do.
I think we're going to have compassion one for another.
We'll be worshiping the Lord.
Jesus said, go and do thou likewise.
James 4. 17 says, therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, To him it is sin.
Don't be like the priest and the Levite mentioned here in this parable, folks.
Be like the Samaritan mentioned here in this parable, who I think is shadowing Christ.
If you see your brother or sister in need, I hope That your compassion is shown to them as God has given you the amount to show.
Jesus said at the Sermon on the Mount, as we close with this today.
Matthew 5, 7 says, Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Amen.
Amen.
Don't you want mercy, folks?
Jesus Christ gave you mercy.
All you've got to do is believe.
Heavenly Father, we thank you so much, Lord, for this lesson you blessed us with, Father.
Lord, I just pray that He appointed people to you, Lord.
We pray appointed people to Jesus, Father.
And if there's one here that doesn't know the mercy of Christ, Lord, we sure pray, Lord, that you'll draw them to the cross and you'll show them Christ on that cross dying for their sins, Father.
Lord, we thank you for each and every person that's come to hear your word, Father.
Lord, we thank you for the fellowship that we get to have here, Lord.
The singing and The gathering for your word, Lord.
It's just such a blessing.
It's the highlight of my week, Lord.
And I thank you for allowing me to come here, Father, and share your word, Lord Oh Father, what a blessing it is, Lord, to know Christ as our Savior and the compassion and mercy, Lord, that he blessed us with, Father.
And we pray that each and every person here knows that.
Oh Lord, we thank you for those you put in our lives to encourage us, Father.
Thank you for these precious people that come to hear your word, Lord.
Help us to be an encouragement to others, Father.
Lord, we just thank you so much, Lord, that Christ stayed on that cross, Lord, and took our sins, Father.
Lord, we want to pray for the caregivers that are here, Lord.
We pray, Lord, that they'll have mercy. on others, Lord, and they'll take care of the people, Lord, the way you want them to be taken care of, Lord.
Father, we pray for those who.
Who can't get out of their beds, Father.
We pray for your mercy on them, Lord.
Pray your will be done there, Father.
Pray your will be done in each and one of our lives that are here today, Father.
Pray, Lord, that each and every one of us fulfill the reason that you put us here, Lord.
Lord, we thank you and we love you so much, Father.
Thank you for Brother Ray, Lord, standing in.
Lord one pray for Brother Larry and his health issues, Father, and his family as well, Father.
And Lord, we want to pray for the Camilla and thank you for her coming.
And working the camera.
And Father, there was one that reached out to me, Father.
And I don't want to give his last name, but I'll give it first, Lord.
I want to pray for Carrie, Lord, as he reached out for prayer.
And Lord, we don't know the exact reason, Lord, but we know that he's asking for prayer, Lord.
And we just pray that your will be done and what he's wanting prayer for, Lord.
We pray, Lord, for him, Lord.
We just pray for each and every person that's here, Father.
And we want to pray for all the things that I'm forgetting to mention.
We thank you and love you so much, Father.
In Jesus' name we pray today, Lord.
Amen.
